Materials & product care
To make sure your favourite pieces last as long as they can, here’s a guide to the materials we use and some tips on how to look after them well.
As some of our pieces are one of a kind, for specific instructions always refer to the garment's sewn-in care label.
Cotton
We work with the finest organic, sustainable and recycled cotton that we can find.
Organic cotton aims to minimise the environmental impact of cotton production by trying to remove harmful pesticides and other chemicals from the production process, whilst remaining a light and breathable fabric. That’s why we choose it for our t-shirts.
When we can’t source organic cotton, we turn to The Better Cotton Initiative which is helping farmers to grow cotton in a way that reduces stress on the local environment and improves the livelihoods and welfare of farming communities, BCI aims to create long-term change.
We also use surplus recycled cotton, a mixture of post-industrial and post-consumer cotton waste, for some of our summer shirting.
To minimise wear or shrinkage, wash at 30°C or below. Air dry flat and out of the sun if possible. Try to avoid excessive ironing and refer to the garment care label to know what iron temperature setting is best to use.
Cashmere
Our cashmere range is sourced from M.Oro Cashmere who work on 8,000 acres of organic farms in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, and follow organic farming regulations of the USA and EU. They take a traditional and natural approach to the care and maintenance of their cashmere goats. M.Oro hold a CU organic cashmere certification and has become the world's first and only organic cashmere farm.
They work with ARCHE Advisors on social auditing, supply chains and human rights, and the Sustainable Fibre Alliance to ensure responsible production practices that minimise environmental impact, safeguard herders and protect animal welfare.
Most cashmere is hand wash only. Avoid wringing or hang drying. It’s best to keep cashmere folded in a cool dry place away from excess sunlight. If pilling occurs, remove with a pilling comb or a fabric shaver
Linen
Agriculturally, linen requires less water and pesticides than cotton. As it’s derived from the flax plant, it's also biodegradable material.
We use linen in much of our shirting, and our signature summer formalwear.
Wash inside out with a mild or non-biological detergent at 30°.
Air-dry on a hanger or flat in the garment’s desired shape. Iron at a high temperature avoiding the buttons, steam will increase the softness. It’s not recommended to bleach or tumble dry linen.
Silk
Silk should be cleaned minimally, instead, hang silk garments to ventilate & freshen. Hang silk away from direct sunlight to avoid bleaching or colour damage.
We recommend dry cleaning your silk garments. To iron silk, use the lowest temperature on an iron. You can also apply light steam to silk to reduce creases, either with a steamer or hung nearby during a hot shower.
Do not tumble dry silk.
Wool
Wool fibres have a natural protective coating, which means they don’t need washing after every wear. Instead, hang wool items to ventilate and freshen.
To wash wool, use a specialist or non-biological detergent and wash at 30°C with a low spin setting. Squeeze out any excess water for heavier garments, without wringing.
Dry wool garments flat to avoid misshaping. If pilling occurs over time, remove with a pilling comb or a fabric shaver.
Recycled polyester
Created from discarded plastic bottles, recycled polyester is a wonder. This clever creation can mimic wool to create a pile effect teddy, that’s both fast drying and insulating.
Fashioned into outerwear, it can make an ideal waterproof that keeps out those cold and wet winters. Used as a microfibre down in our padded gilet and jackets, recycled polyester retains the warmth and breathability of feathers without any harm to animals (or the possibility of allergens.)
Ecovero™
A fabric sourced from sustainable wood and pulp, leading the way in responsible viscose production. Offered with manufacturing transparency, meaning you can track the fabrics entire life cycle.
ECOVERO™ also holds an Ecolabel. This label of environmental excellence is only awarded to manufacturers with significantly low environmental impact.
